CBD has benefits for many health-related issues

As science catches up with users’ accolades, early research seems to support users’ claims of efficacy for the management of pain, neurodegenerative diseases, anxiety and depression, and general wellness.

CBD is one of the two primary phytocannabinoids found in cannabis. It occurs naturally in cannabis and hemp. Hemp is usually the primary source for CBD extraction.

Researchers are finding that CBD has several important properties. It’s an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory that can potentially alleviate the effects of stress and inflammation in the body that are often symptoms of several disorders and conditions.

NEUROLOGICAL BENEFITS

Early research has shown promise for CBD and how it affects the ECS. That promise could be critical for people with neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer’s, MS, Parkinson’s, and epilepsy. Because of CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties, patients experience reduced inflammation, which can relieve neurodegenerative symptoms.

CBD helps prevent damage done by free radicals. An article in MBG Health about Alzheimer’s, writers reported that CBD could have health benefits: reducing and protecting against free radical damage, as well as inflammation. Further, CBD not only protects brain cells, but it also helps to generate new cells.

The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease reported that research seems to show that CBD helps to prevent the development of social recognition deficit. Research published in the American Society for Clinical Investigation shows that CBD may be useful for treating hypertension. Studies have shown that CBD can reduce systolic blood pressure and cardiac output volume. Scientists conclude that CBD’s anti-anxiety properties reduce stress and improve heart health. Given CBD’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, there is promise for CBD in treating heart-related conditions.

CBD may also be an effective and natural treatment for chemotherapy-induced nausea and pain.

The American Cancer Society and the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology also report that CBD helps to significantly prevent the spread of some cancers. Not only that, but it also appears that CBD aids in cancer cell destruction.

Researchers have found that CBD reduced some symptoms associated with substance use disorders. Smokers who used inhalers containing CBD smoked fewer cigarettes then usual and had no further cravings for nicotine. CBD may be a promising treatment for people with opioid addiction disorders by helping to prevent or reduce withdrawal symptoms, including anxiety, mood-related symptoms, pain, and insomnia.

MENTAL HEALTH

CBD has shown promise in treatment for anxiety disorders. A 2015 review of CBD studies, published in the journal Neurotherapeutics, led reviewers to conclude that CBD demonstrates potent anxiolytic (anxiety-relieving) properties. CBD’s anxiolytic effects make it a strong candidate in the treatment of anxiety and depression. It works indirectly with the brain’s serotonin receptors to influence how synapses respond to available serotonin.

Derived from tryptophan, serotonin is a biochemical neurotransmitter that regulates mood and other functions. CBD simulates the effects of serotonin, which helps to increase the body’s receptivity.

CBD acts quickly, and its effects are sustained. Compared to traditional medications, CBD also has fewer side effects. Low doses of CBD (10 mg/kg or less) treated anxiety symptoms better. CBD works as an agonist, triggering the opposite response when it binds to a receptor. It is possible that small doses can give rise to a positive response, while higher doses evoke a compensatory effect that counteracts CBD’s effects.

Other early studies conducted with animals have shown that CBD may help:

  • Reduce stress
  • Decrease physiological responses, e.g., elevated heart rate
  • Improve PTSD symptoms
  • Induce sleep

Some CBD users take it for depression because its benefits seem to be superior compared to traditional antidepressants. It can take up to 6 weeks for SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) to begin working. CBD, on the other hand, takes effect more quickly for sustained benefits. While traditional antidepressants can have adverse side effects, CBD’s side effects are minor.

A review of multiple animal studies in 2018 demonstrated the antidepressant effects. In another study from 2018, researchers found that CBD appears to be a fast-acting antidepressant because it works to amplify serotonin’s neurotransmission in the brain’s hippocampus.

PAIN MANAGEMENT

One of CBD’s most popular health benefits is that it presents an effective alternative in the treatment of chronic pain and inflammation.

The body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS) is responsible for regulating sleep, appetite, and pain. It also regulates the body’s immune system response. These neurotransmitters are a natural part of the central nervous system.

All mammals, including humans, have an endocannabinoid system. When the ECS is dysregulated, chronic pain and inflammation are often the results.

Research has shown CBD relieves chronic pain through its interaction with ECS receptors. Most current studies involve animal models, but results show promise. One study found rats experienced reduced levels of pain response to surgical incisions after they received CBD.

In another study, researchers investigated the effects of oral CBD on sciatic pain and related inflammation. Their investigations revealed that CBD treatment reduced both.

Research results published in the European Journal of Pain revealed that topical CBD applications reduced the pain and inflammation of arthritis. Other studies have shown that CBD relieved the inflammation and pain of neuropathy. Neuropathy and arthritis pain and inflammation are notoriously challenging to treat with traditional Western medications.

Currently, research is underway to determine the extent to which CBD can help with conditions such as arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

CBD is acknowledged to be an effective analgesic. Sixty-two percent of people using CBD use it to treat their joint and arthritis pain and the chronic pain of conditions such as fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis. Preclinical studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health are investigating users’ claims.

Scientists believe CBD works through the central nervous system and at the site of localized joint pain. Several studies indicate that CBD offers successful pain relief for osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis.

Continuing preclinical animal studies reinforce those findings. Human studies show users tolerate CBD well and experience fewer side effects than other prescription pain relievers. Opioids and stronger pain medications can be addictive—CBD is not.
